The knee is the most loaded joint in the body. On the Lake Geneva arc — Rolle, Gland, Nyon, Morges, Mont-sur-Rolle, Bursins, Gilly, Begnins — between Jura trail running, football fields, road cycling along the lake, and winter skiing, knee pathologies top the consultation list. What are the most common causes, and when should you consult?

Book onlineWhy is the knee so vulnerable?
The knee combines mobility and stability while supporting body weight. It contains:
- • 4 main ligaments: ACL, PCL, MCL, LCL
- • 2 menisci: medial and lateral (shock absorbers)
- • Articular cartilage
- • Tendons (patellar, quadriceps), bursae
This complexity is why pain can come from very different structures — and why a precise clinical diagnosis is essential.
The most common causes seen in clinic
1. ITB syndrome (runner's knee)
Very common in runners and cyclists in the area. Pain on the outer side of the knee, typically after 15-25 minutes of effort. Treatment combines hip stabilizer strengthening, gait work, and load adaptation.
2. Patellar tendinopathy (jumper's knee)
Common in volleyball, basketball, and soccer players from Rolle, La Côte, or Gland clubs. Pain located below the kneecap. Reference protocol: slow eccentric exercises (HSR), 12+ week load management.
3. ACL injury
Often traumatic (skiing, football, pivot sports), requires rapid assessment. Pre- and post-op rehab is crucial, and 30-50% of ACL injuries can avoid surgery depending on the patient profile (KANON study).
4. Meniscus injury
From rotation under load or degenerative wear. Symptoms: mechanical locking, swelling, palpation pain. Physiotherapy often allows avoiding surgery, especially for degenerative tears.
5. Knee osteoarthritis
Common after 50. Contrary to popular belief, adapted physical activity is the #1 treatment — superior to medication and long-term injections.
When to consult urgently?
- • Knee that locks in flexion or extension
- • Significant swelling within 6h after trauma
- • Sense of instability or "giving way"
- • Inability to bear weight
- • Visible deformation
- • Severe night pain
